Certificate Programs in Interpreting
The Certificate Programs in Interpreting prepare bilingual individuals
to work as language interpreters in the community, in health care
settings and in the court system. The training is language-specific.
Bilingual instructor/interpreters instruct in each of the various
language combinations selected. The language combinations are determined
by the suitability of applicants and the needs of the community,
courts and health care systems.
A very high level of language skills is required of professional
interpreters. As well, interpreters need to communicate effectively
and act according to interpreting conventions. For these reasons,
applicants to the Certificate Programs in Interpreting are required
to write an entrance exam.
Entrance Exam
The entrance exam consists of two parts: an examination of written
composition in English and a translation of an English passage into your language of specialty, and an oral examination to ascertain oral command of English and a language of specialty, as well as the candidates aptitude for interpreting. The Entrance Exam is part of the pre-course "Introduction to Interpreting/Translation" (INTR 1192), which is offered three times a year (January, April, August).
The entrance exam may be taken only once in any given calendar year.
