The new Student Union fee ($23.75 per term) is applied one time per term, for all Downtown lecture Paralegal courses. The fee is waived for online courses. Questions may be directed to the Student Union Office, 604 916 7386 or organiser@suvcc.ca .
Securities I (starting in November), taught by Vancouver lawyer Joe Chan, will be running on Wednesdays starting November 3. The date has been selected to accommodate students who wish to take Securities in addition to Intermediate Corporate, which runs on Tuesdays. View courses here; click here for online registration assistance.
Securities II, starting January, will be available for registration starting in approximately November. See the top of this page for registration announcements.
Prerequisites: Securities I is available to any paralegal or legal support staff person who has corporate experience or coursework. For students wanting a stronger foundation, consider Corporate Law: Basic (LEGL 1305) which starts September 7, either online or lecture. Securities II is available to any paralegal or legal support staff person who has successfully completed Securities I (LEGL 1306).
Paralegals who complete these courses, and later decide to apply for the Certificate program, will receive course credit towards the Certificate. Contact the Program Coordinator with questions.
Paralegals concentrating on Litigation are aware that the Civil Litigation Rules are changing effective July 1, 2010. The following options are available for paralegals and legal support staff to update their knowledge:
* The regular series Litigation I, Litigation II (offered consecutively in September term), Creditors' Remedies (January) and Personal Injury Practice (March) will include a fully updated curriculum for the 2010-2011 academic year. Registration figures permitting, we plan to offer the series both in Online and Lecture format. View the "Online Courses" page for information and a sample online course option.
* Any legal assistant or paralegal may register for these courses, as long as you have litigation experience, and/or have taken courses in litigation procedure.
* If you are not working towards a Certificate and have not been formally accepted to the program, you may still take these courses, as long as you start with the first and, if you choose to continue, proceed in sequential order. You may choose to "audit" the course(s), by registering at full price, and then notifying the Program Coordinator that you wish to take the course on a non-credit basis. Should you decide to take the course(s) for credit, and later decide to work towards a Certificate, you will receive credit for the course(s) towards your Certificate.
* Students who have taken the series in the past and wish to re-take any of the four courses to update your knowledge, are welcome to do so. No elective credit is available for re-taking the courses. If you wish to reduce your workload, you may choose to "audit" the course(s), by registering at the regular price, and then notifying the Program Coordinator that you wish to take the course on a non-credit basis.
* Students not wishing to retake classes may view two valuable resources stocked in the VCC Library reference section: the updated Guide to Civil Litigation, and the Civil Rules Transition Guide, published by the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia, a comprehensive resource including the complete text of the rules and tables of concordance (“old to new” and “new to old”). Contact the VCC library for details and access information.
Yikes! The B.C. Paralegal Association still is missing a Student Representative from VCC! Interested in this great networking opportunity? Contact them at info@bcparalegalassociation.com.
